mmWave MAC Protocol Design for Massive IoT in 5G
The next generation of mobile network, 5G, is underway and its business context will be distinctly different from networks today. One of the main goals of 5G is to effectively support the emerging Internet of things (IoT). The vision of 2020 and beyond for 5G includes a great deal of growing use cases with massive numbers of devices (e.g., sensors, actuators and cameras) with a wide range of characteristics and demands.
My EDGE project “mmWaveIoT” will address the design of a media access control (MAC) protocol for massive IoT devices compatible with the mmWave and 5G access network requirements, following our recent work focused on designing a distributed MAC protocol for wireless devices using mmWave technology, which is called fair distributed reservation protocol (FDRP).
