Cian Ó Mathúna

Professor Cian Ó Mathúna has 30 years experience in applied research and technology transfer in microelectronics. Currently Head of Strategic Programmes at Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, he has held technical and executive positions in the National Microelectronics Research Centre, UCC, in the Irish Government Programme in Advanced Technology in Power Electronics, PEI Technologies and Tyndall National Institute.

Prof. Ó Mathúna is co-author of 120+ publications and has sourced research funding of €20m+. He is co-founder of Irish industry-academic clusters in surface mount technology (Smart Group Ireland), wireless sensor networks (WiSEN) and power electronics (PEIG) and was an Irish Government appointee to the Innovation Task Force Implementation Group in 2010.

Prof. Ó Mathúna is founder of the International Workshop on Power Supply on Chip and is Research Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University College Cork.

Prof. Ó Mathuna is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) in the field of power electronics with the citation “for leadership in the development of power supply using micromagnetics on silicon”.

Prof. Ó Mathuna is particularly interested in working with EDGE Fellows in the following areas which his research encompasses:

• Power Source in Package – System integration/packaging for energy harvesting/storage/power management IC components
• Power Supply in Package – System integration for high frequency power management ICs and micromagnetic inductors on silicon
• Power management ICs (PMICs) for energy harvesting/storage systems for powering smart things in the Internet of Things
• Very high frequency power management ICs for power supply on chip (PwrSoC)/power supply in package (PwrSiP) using novel micromagnetics on silicon
