EPIC: Energy-efficient Phase-Insensitive coherent Communications

My project aims to combine nonlinear optics and advanced digital signal processing to overcome the limits to information capacity in next generation optical communications systems. It aims to harness stimulated Brillouin scattering to amplify in-band carrier signals without increasing out-of-band noise, and to develop novel machine learning to correct both deterministic and stochastic nonlinear distortions in real-time coherent communications.

The significance of the project lies in its potential to enhance information capacity and energy-efficiency in the optical core network beyond present limits. Expected outcomes include new software algorithms and hardware for evaluation. Irish and EU companies will benefit by commercializing the results.
